City, Emmaru and Namboku Lines

Main Articles: City Line Emmaru Line Namboku Line

Before the Namboku Line was jointly operated by Lipan Railways and Entetsu, it was operated by a third company, LURC. It had two branches (Kaname and Minowa branches) that converged at Emmaru Central. Southbound trains went on the Minowa Branch via River Alice while northbound trains went on the Kaname Branch via Karasuma. This made the two branches only had trains in 1 direction.

The Emmaru Line was predominantly made to provide service in the other direction. It is the first metro line owned and operated by Emmaru Railways, planned to run between Portland Street and Higashiyama. At first, the line was planned to have three services: an anticlockwise (from Sakurami Town) service from Higashiyama to Portland Street, a clockwise service (from Sakurami Town) from Portland Street to Higashiyama, and a third looping service from Portland Street to Emmaru Central via City Hall and Yachiyo. This third service ran in the opposite direction of the Namboku Line. It was planned that the two non-looping services would not run during the rush hour (thus not serving Higashiyama) and the looping service will run instead at double frequency.

However, after the great split, the Namboku Line lost the Minowa branch, and all trains were routed via Karasuma. This meant that the third service was no longer needed. Thus, trains only ran between Portland Stret and Higashiyama. Around the same time, plans were extended to Enshima End, which meant that Emmaru Central depot was too far to be able to provide a stable service without favoring part of the line. Thus, the stabling depot was relocated to Higashiyama.

The tracks linking City Hall and Emmaru Central thus became unused. Platforms 3 and 4 of City Hall station were closed for a short while before they were opened up again for a new line linking the two stations, the City Line.
